Interview With Alex Collier

Alex Collier has been Weightlifting for over 10 years, his best Snatch is 140kg and best Clean & Jerk is 175kg in the 85kg body-weight class. Alex is a 7 times British Champion, European, World and Commonwealth competitor. He has been kind enough to give us an insight into his life as a GB Weightlifter.

What got you into Weightlifting in the first place?

Mark Clegg, a former British Champion Weightlifter, came into my high school offering trials for Weightlifting. So, I tried it, and loved it ever since.

How does your typical training week look?

I follow a programme which is written by Yousef Ziu. He's my favourite coach; we have a great relationship and he helps to get the best out of me. I train 6 times a week and I'm in the gym for 4 hours a day.

You've competed nationally and internationally, what was your favourite competition?

My favourite competition would have to be the Commonwealth Senior Championships in India. It was a really good experience visiting India and I also made my best competition total to date.

What are you looking to achieve in the next 2 years?

In the next two years, I would like to compete in the 2018 Commonwealth Games and World Championships.

Top tip for aspiring Olympic Lifters?

Find a coach you get a long with, so you can have a good training relationship with. This, in my opinion, makes listening and learning a lot easier and makes training a little bit more enjoyable too.

Top tip for CrossFitters coming into Lifting?

Train with experienced Weightlifters so you can learn the correct technique and exercises for Weightlifting. Doing a Weightlifting WOD (Work Out of the Day) with the correct technique will make that WOD a lot easier.
